Summer English Language Arts Assignment 2024
Grade 8 ELA
Mrs. Strehlau
The summer ELA assignment, in preparation for 8th grade, will entail the first ten lessons in Simple Solutions and The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis or Hero by Mike Lupica. Should you have any questions at any time, please email me. I check my email regularly during the summer.
Simple Solutions
The first ten lessons in the Simple Solutions English and Grammar book must be completed. The work must reflect effort and will be graded. Please note that all questions can be successfully navigated through the Help Pages found in the back of the book.
The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963
When the Watson family sets out on a trip south to visit Grandma in Birmingham, Alabama, they don’t realize that they’re heading toward one of the darkest moments in America’s history. The Watsons’ journey reminds us that even in the hardest times, laughter and family can help us get through anything. The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963 is a humorous, yet emotional and powerful tale that highlights the theme of overcoming obstacles, prevalent in the content of the 8th grade ELA course.
Hero
Hero is an adventure novel for middle-grade readers about a teenage boy who develops superpowers and uses them to avenge the murder of his superhero father. In the process, he must learn to control his emotions, find a mentor he can trust, protect those he loves, and defeat powerful assailants. Hero also highlights the theme of overcoming obstacles, prevalent in the content of the 8th grade ELA course.
Each student must complete the One-Pager being sure to follow the directions on the back carefully in addition to the plot diagram. Further literary analysis will be done in class, and success will be dependent upon your reading the book.
The expectation is that all work will be completed thoroughly and on time. A solid start to your 8th grade year is dependent on your effort and work ethic.
